5 facts drivers are often surprised to learn about car insurance

Most drivers know car insurance can help after an accident. What isn't always as clear is how different types of cover work, when insurance may respond to a claim and where policy differences can matter.

What does car insurance cover?

The answer depends on the type of policy you have. Comprehensive car insurance generally covers damage to your own vehicle, as well as risks such as theft, hijacking, fire and certain weather-related events. Third-party policies offer simplified protection and are primarily designed to cover damage you cause to other people's vehicles or property.

Understanding those differences is important because not all policies provide the same level of cover.

Five facts drivers are often surprised to learn about car insurance:

1. Not every policy covers damage to your own car

The level of protection provided by car insurance depends on the type of policy you choose.

In South Africa, the main types of car insurance are comprehensive insurance, third-party, fire and theft insurance, and third-party only insurance. Each offers a different level of protection.

In reality, third-party only insurance is designed to cover damage you cause to other people's vehicles or property. If you're involved in an accident, repairs to your own vehicle would generally not be covered.

Comprehensive car insurance typically provides broader protection, including cover for damage to your own vehicle following an insured event.

2. Theft and accident cover aren't the same thing

Drivers sometimes assume that if they're insured against theft, they'll also be covered for accident damage.

However, third-party, fire and theft insurance generally covers specific events such as theft, hijacking and fire, while accident damage to your own vehicle is usually not included.

Understanding the difference can help you choose cover that matches your needs.

3. The word "comprehensive" doesn't tell the whole story

Two comprehensive policies may not provide exactly the same benefits.

Factors such as excesses, repair options, claims processes, liability limits and additional benefits can differ between insurers. That's why comparing cover in detail is often more useful than comparing product names alone.

4. Small policy features can make a big difference

When comparing policies, people often focus on premium first.

Which optional extras can car insurance include? Depending on the insurer, optional extras may include car hire, roadside assistance, credit shortfall cover and cover for vehicle accessories.

Some benefits may be included as standard, while others may be optional.

5. Weather can be just as damaging as a collision

Accidents aren't the only risk vehicles face.

Fire, flooding, theft and hail can all result in expensive damage. Understanding whether your policy covers these events can help you avoid unpleasant surprises when unforeseen events occur.

For example, hail damage is included as a standard benefit with OUTsurance Comprehensive Car Insurance.

Not all cover is the same

Car insurance isn't just about having a policy in place. It's about understanding how that policy works when something goes wrong. Taking the time to review what is covered, what isn't and what benefits are included can help you choose cover with greater confidence.
