The trail run entries
Runners got to experience and take in the scenic Gun Route as the trail run started at Van Riebeek Park, Oranjezicht and finished at Green Point Common.
299 people entered and participated in the 15km trail run. The run attracted runners of different ages with the oldest entry being 70-year-old Tonnie Upham who came in at 91, finishing at a time of 02:27:23 while 18-year-old Max Cheary was the youngest participant, coming in at number 33, finishing at 01:38:29.
The race to the finish line
31-year-old Ivan Robinson was leading halfway just before University of the Western Cape (UCW) BA student Tashwell Damons took the lead shortly after at the start of the climb up Signal Hill Road. The leaders had a bit of marshalling confusion running off course near the finish, with Robinson correcting quickly to break the tape but was quick to point to Damons as the real winner. ‘He was about 100m ahead and I would never have caught him,’ Robinson admitted. ‘It was a great course, perfect for this event and I look forward to racing next year.’
Damons finished at 01:16:47 with Robinson taking second place, finishing at a time of 01:17:17.
The women’s race
Meanwhile, regular podium-finisher at the Summer and Winter Trail Series, Nicola ‘Nicky’ Wills won the women’s race in 1:27:37and Andrea Vogel came in second place finishing in 01:37:08. The highlight of the women’s section was when well- known 61-year-old trail runner Maxine Reilly, came in third finishing at 01:37:32 just a few seconds behind Vogel.
‘It’s wonderful to enjoy this extra Gun Run day this year,” said Carl Louw, OUTsurance Chief Marketing Officer. ‘‘I think the 15km Trail Race is an excellent addition and we are looking forward to growing it in the future,’ he added.
The official event charity
‘As part of the OUTsurance’ contribution, we contributed over a R100 000 to the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa. This is such a fantastic event. Please come down next year, we’ll be here again,’ he added.
The Animal Welfare Society also brought some of their dogs who took part in the 5km Pet Walk. ‘Today’s event was amazing!’ said Animal Welfare Society Inspectorate Controller, Shannon-Lee Beukes.
‘We had fun and the dogs loved it so much more. This was an amazing opportunity for us as an organisation and we were able to share our passion with all who attended.’
