Since its modest beginning in 2005, thousands of motorists around Johannesburg, City of Tshwane and Cape Town have come to rely on the assistance of the OUTsurance Pointsmen Project. Our involvement in this project meant that in addition to providing thousands of motorists with car insurance quotes every year – we could now do our bit to give back to the community by helping to alleviate traffic congestion, contribute towards road safety, and create job opportunities in underprivileged communities. There are two types of pointsmen: static pointsmen who are assigned to specific high-traffic intersections and mobile pointsmen who are dispatched to traffic hot spots at a moment’s notice. These men and women are truly passionate about making your daily commute as stress-free as possible – you’ll recognise them by their bright-yellow bibs, toothy grins and friendly demeanour!
To request a pointsman on your route simply download the OUTsurance app and use our pointsmen function to suggest an intersection that you could use some assistance on. We monitor requests as they come in and send out pointsmen according to where most request come from.
The Pointsmen Project is the result of a great partnership with the cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Tshwane. To make the pointsmen project a reality, the Metro Police Departments from each area have employed and trained 130 static and 56 mobile Pointsmen in total to direct traffic at intersections in need. Top areas covered and most problematic intersections in each city are monitored to ensure pointsmen are dispatched effectively.
Are you wondering how the pointsmen make a difference on South African roads every day? Perhaps you’d like to know how many pointsmen work within your city? With an initiative that touches so many lives, we’d like to answer any questions you might have.
