How Staff Helping SA OUT got involved
OUTsurance staff members rolled up their sleeves to clean along the banks of the Hennops River. It was a full day of hard work, getting their hands dirty and ensuring that they leave the riverside clean and looking beautiful. They took off their OUTsurance staff hats and put on their eco warrior hats to clean, remove alien plants and clear canopies.
‘As Environmental Health is a continuous focus point for Staff Helping SA OUT, I am pleased to announce that SHSAO has signed a 13-month contract with Hennops Revival, that sees two of their full-time staff members keeping the Hennops embankments through Centurion clean and litter free,’ said Staff Helping SA OUT (SHSAO) Coordinator, Monica Coetzee.
Earth Day and the power of collective action
Earth Day was created and organised by its founders, with the first event taking place worldwide on the 22nd of April 1970. The main aim of the organisation was to mobilise people across the world to protect the planet, believing that together we can do more to protect and preserve our planet.
To date, more than 192 countries including South Africa observe Earth Day and pledge to keep the earth clean and protect it. The Earth Day organisation calls upon individuals, businesses, governments, and the private sector to join hands in safeguarding our planet. Many organisations partake in events that encourage their staff members to protect the earth. OUTsurance, through their Staff Helping SA OUT initiative, contributes to this initiative through our Earth Day clean-up project with the Hennops River cleaning project.
Earth Day is committed to safeguard the planet through various initiatives which include:
Planet vs. Plastics: Commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, by demanding a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.
The Canopy Project: Planting trees globally, restoring forests in areas hardest hit by environmental challenges. They call on communities to donate as little as $1 to help reforest communities and fight climate change.
Climate Education vs. The Climate Crisis: Provide climate and environmental literacy that is coupled with strong civic education to create jobs and build a green consumer market.
The Great Global Clean-up: Encouraging people to get involved and help to create a waste-free world.
Fashion for the Earth: Promoting sustainable fashion with the aim to move the industry, and consumers, away from fast fashion and towards sustainable practices.
