This year, OUTsurance staff proudly nominated The Dog Trust as their charity of choice, supporting the organisation's work in caring for vulnerable, abandoned and neglected dogs.

About The Dog Trust

Founded in 2015, The Dog Trust was created to help dogs living in difficult circumstances in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg. What started as a response to a growing need in the community has become an organisation dedicated to giving vulnerable dogs a better chance at life.

The team rescues dogs affected by neglect, cruelty, injury and dog fighting, providing the medical care, rehabilitation and support they need before finding them loving homes. They also work closely with the local community by providing food, vaccinations, dipping and other preventative care services to help keep pets healthy and cared for.

Every day, The Dog Trust makes a practical difference to the lives of dogs and the people who care for them.

A meaningful day at The Dog Trust

To support this cause, a group of staff members signed up to join OUTsurance’s CSI initiative, Staff Helping SA OUT, to spend a day volunteering at the shelter. Together, they built and planted a vegetable garden, painted the puppy pens, spent time socialising with puppies and took the adult dogs for walks. They also repurposed old tyres into colourful dog beds, creating comfortable spaces for the dogs to rest.

Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, OUTsurance donated 1720kg of dog food, together with dog blankets, cleaning supplies, F10 disinfectant, washing products, mops, brooms, rakes, poop scoops, a brush cutter, a weed eater and many other essential items to help keep the shelter running. They also donated overalls, beanies and safety boots to support the incredible staff who work tirelessly in all weather conditions to care for the dogs every single day.

‘It was an absolute privilege to spend the day alongside this incredible team and contribute in a meaningful way.’ Mishka Harding, one of the volunteers, said.

One of the most inspiring moments was learning that, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of their team, The Dog Trust was able to share many of the donated supplies with other animal welfare organisations. That meant that the kindness shown didn't stop with one shelter; it rippled OUT to support even more animals in need.

The day was a reminder that making a difference often comes down to small actions that add up. Whether it was planting a garden, painting a wall, walking a dog or donating supplies, every contribution helped support the important work being done by The Dog Trust.
