Runners came gunning for the big prize at the 2023 OUTsurance Gun Run. With an exciting lineup of races, from the 10km run and the 17km trail run on the 16th to the 21.1km half-marathon on the 17th, the participants were ready to test their limits.

Race information

The OUTsurance Gun Run enjoyed a great turnout of 15 960 runners in 2023 with two thirds of the participants entering the  the 21.1km half-marathonThe various races started at Fritz Sonnenberg Road in Green Point and finished at the Green Point Common, just opposite the Green Point Cricket Club which gave runners and supporters space to soak up the atmosphere at the end of the race.

Half-marathon winners

Sibusiso Nzima from the Murray and Roberts Running Club took the number one spot in the 21.1km half-marathon, male category, finishing at 1:03:50. A career-defining race for Nzima who says winning this race, at his fastest ever OUTsurance Gun Run time, gave him the confidence to go all out for an Olympic qualifier at Valencia in December.

One of the male runners who also brought excitement to the race was Anthony Timoteus who finished third   in what was his debut half-marathon. Timoteus is a University of the Western Cape graduate who is coached by Zola Budd.

Carla Molinaro from the Phantane Athletic Club took first place in the women’s category, finishing at 01:17:40.

 OUTsurance Gun Run  charity

A donation of R126 676 was made to the Animal Welfare Society (AWS), the official charity of the OUTsurance Gun Run.

‘This is massive for us,’ said the AWS Head of Communications, Resource Development and Fundraising, Allan Perrins. ‘Last year’s funds were used for an important sterilisation project, and we are doing more of the same with this increased sum. We will be using these funds to drive a programme of sterilisation, vaccination and chip implants in and around our own base in Philippi.’

South African National Parks was another beneficiary of this year’s Gun Run, especially Table Mountain, whose paths received a significant boost through the partnership with Atlantic Athletic Club.

‘A major thing for us at Atlantic Athletic Club (AAC) and the OUTsurance Gun Run Trail is how this race can give back to our trail running community and the paths that they will be running on,’ explained OUTsurance Gun Run Trail Run Director, Brandon Moulder. ‘This year saw the beginning of what I hope will be a long-standing relationship with Friends of Table Mountain.’

The thirtieth anniversary of the OUTsurance Gun Run will take place in September 2024.

‘The OUTsurance Gun Run is always a highlight in the Cape Town community and next year promises to be even bigger and better,’ said OUTsurance Chief Marketing Officer, Carl Louw.
