Last week Johannesburg commuters had to fend for themselves in the midst of chaotic peak-hour traffic when it was announced that the City of Johannesburg temporarily suspended the services of the OUTsurance 702 Pointsmen project

This decision was made after the City of Johannesburg was notified that they had to adhere to the requirements of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) which required them to advertise a public “Request for Proposal”. This would allow all interested parties, including the current project manager Traffic Freeflow (TFF), to submit competitive proposals to the City.

During this time, short-term insurance company OUTsurance, who has been acting as principal sponsor of this project since its inception in 2005, together with project manager Traffic Freeflow (TFF) and media partner Talk Radio 702 worked closely with the City of Johannesburg to ensure that the more than 200 people involved in the Johannesburg Pointsmen Project will not lose their jobs during the proposal process.

It was concluded that the project will be allowed to continue during the proposal process and that all pointspeople will need to be registered as “Peace Officers” before they would be allowed to return to their posts on Monday morning, 7 November 2011.

In response to these recent developments, Willem Roos, CEO of OUTsurance, said that OUTsurance is just as committed as ever before to the long-term success of this initiative and that they would like to continue their role as main sponsor of this project. He believes that this project plays a pivotal role in creating jobs in underprivileged communities and that thousands of commuters have come to rely on the help of the OUTsurance 702 pointsmen to get to and from work safely.
