After over a year without OUTsurance Pointsmen guiding traffic in the City of Gold, the free service to motorists has returned.

On 2 November 2020, the City of Joburg and Traffic Free Flow (TFF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding, bringing the OUTsurance Pointsmen back to Johannesburg from 1 January 2021.

Commenting on the developments, TFF’s excited CEO, Bheki Zondo, stated: “The tender process has taken some time. However, we’d like to thank the City of Joburg for recognising our experience in running this crucial service since its inception. Of course, we could never have done it without OUTsurance standing by us from the beginning – especially during the last couple of years when the future was in doubt.”

TFF, which conceptualised and initiated the project 15 years ago, has now been able to re-create jobs, with 40 new Pointsmen (freshly trained by the JMPD) joining the 60-strong team already with the programme.

OUTsurance remains the anchor sponsor, committing over R38 million per year to the Pointsmen project in Joburg and Tshwane. To date, the investment stands at over R200 million, which has been used to pay salaries, infrastructure and related expenses for the successful operation of TFF.

Danie Matthee, OUTsurance CEO, is equally excited. “The Pointsmen have become an extension of our brand, and its values, and we’re delighted to see them return to Johannesburg. More importantly, we are thrilled to be able to play our part in providing much-needed jobs,” he said.

The free service will last for at least the next five years in Jozi, according to the agreement.

“We are very privileged to make a meaningful and tangible difference in the lives of Joburg’s citizens. We have always enjoyed hearing all the positive Pointsmen stories and look forward to hearing many more in the future,” added Matthee.
