Water damage can cause serious damage to your home and contents. In severe cases, it may even result in structural damage to your home.

We put together the following list of practical tips to help you avoid any possible home or contents insurance claims arising from water damage.

Tip 1:  When you go on holiday, make sure to shut off the water supply to your home.
Tip 2:  Make sure to repair any loose or cracked tiles in your shower and to fix any damaged grout lines every six months.
Tip 3:  Inspect all sinks, toilets and dishwashers for any signs or leaks or corrosion on a regular basis.
Tip 4:  Make sure to inspect appliance hoses and plumbing fittings for breakage or bending.
Tip 5:  Double check the connection to your washing machine and avoid over tightening.
Tip 6:  Always leave a small gap (between 7cm and 10cm) behind the washing machine to avoid hose kinks.
Tip 7:  Keep a close eye on your monthly water bill. If you receive a water bill that is too high, for no apparent reason, there may be a water leak somewhere on your property.
Tip 8:  Clean out roof gutters on a regular basis. If your gutters are too high, call in the help of a professional.
Tip 9:  Make sure to inspect your roof for any cracks or breaks and to have these repaired as soon as possible.
Tip 10:  Inspect your outside walls, windows and doors for any unusual wear and tear. Repair and replace caulk, glazing, weather stripping, and door seals if needed.
