Get to your destination safely during the holidays with these essential road safety tips.

Thousands of vehicles are on our roads every day with even higher volumes passing our tollgates every hour during the holidays. As we travel to different destinations, we all need to understand and adhere to essential safety rules to make sure that everyone is safe on our roads. These tips will help you stay safe whether you are driving, walking or cycling.

Motorists

  • Obey the rules of the road and carry your driver's license with you. Drivers must always obey the Speed Limits as speeding can increase the risk of accidents. Adhere to posted limits and adjust your speed according to road conditions.
  • As a driver, you must make sure that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before any journey. Check that all lights and indicators, windscreen wipers, brakes, steering, exhaust system and tyres are working properly and not damaged.
  • Always wear your seat belt and ensure that everyone in the car is wearing theirs.

According to the South African law, each passenger being transported in a vehicle needs to make use of the provided seatbelts and strap themselves in. It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure all passengers, adults and children, are strapped in.

Cyclists

  • When cycling during the holidays remember that there is a strength in numbers. Do not go on the road alone, find a partner or group to cycle with you - this will help in the event of an emergency.
  • You are required by law to cycle in single file and to wear a safety helmet.
  • Always stop at red traffic lights and adhere to all road signs.

Pedestrians

  • When walking near traffic – avoid distractions and be visible!
  • Always stay alert: Avoid distractions such as headphones or cell phones while walking near traffic. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Walk against traffic: When walking on roads without sidewalks, always walk as close as possible to the edge of the road, facing oncoming traffic to see vehicles that are approaching.
  • Where available, make use of sidewalks or footpaths. Do not walk inside the road.
  • Use designated crosswalks: Cross the street at designated crosswalks or intersections, obeying traffic signals and pedestrian crossing signs.

We’re all responsible for road safety whether we’re driving, walking or cycling. Following the rules of the road can help to stay safe and reduce accidents on the road. These tips are not only for the holidays but for every day and all hours of the day.
