Early last week South Africa was struck by an earthquake, a common occurrence in places like San Francisco or Japan but a completely unexpected event locally which took many South Africans by surprise.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre of the magnitude 5.3 earthquake was in Orkney and was felt from the Free State to KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga.  Emergency services across the country were put on high alerts in all metropolitan areas amid fears of serious injuries.

According to Sky News, one man died when a wall of an abandoned mining building fell on him and three other people were hurt when the quake damaged a training centre at a mine.
