This weekend promises a spectacular mountain bike race event with the OUTsurance KZN Expedition taking place early on Saturday morning.

Cyclists taking part in the 80km event will leave from Inanda Dam at 6:00 sharp with riders registered for the 40km route, leaving at 7.30. The route finishes at the Kingfisher Canoe Club on the Durban beachfront.

Route designer Devlin Fogg decided to remove the Silver Pipe bridge-crossing from the route to help make this year’s even much more rider friendly. Although many cyclists enjoyed the thrill of crossing the river on a suspended pipe bridge, it proved too much for many riders.

In place of the bridge-crossing, cyclists will be able to make use of the new multi-lane tarred bridge at Kwa-Dabeka that links Umhlanga with Hillcrest.

Race committee head, Wynand de Villers from Cyclingnews Magazine says that although the route has been made more accessible, riders can still look forward to another challenging race this year with a 1500 metres ascent in the 80 km route and a 800m ascent in the 40km route.

Although the deadline for entries is at 23:00 this evening, riders will still be able to register at Cycle Lab, Durban North on Friday, 11 November from 9:00 to 17:00.
