When a few day’s leave equate to many days on holiday, it’s an opportunity you simply can’t waste. But what do you do when you can’t afford to actually go anywhere?

Instead of spending extra cash on a trip to the coast this Easter, have a staycation instead! Not only will you save money by making home your holiday destination, but there are also many activities that will keep you entertained and save money too. You could use this time to do some home maintenance or get cracking on those DIY projects you’ve been putting off forever.

Here are a few great home maintenance and money saving ideas to get you started.

Weatherproof

Heavy rain and winds can cause serious damage to your home so do a roof inspection and patch up any waterproofing issues. If it’s safe enough when you’re up there, plan a rooftop picnic and watch the sun go down.

Get energy smart

Start your journey to energy saving by replacing the globes in your home with energy efficient alternatives. Save power and save money! Make an event of it and have a candle-light dinner when the globes are out.

Get your hands dirty

A useful home maintenance idea is to remove debris such as loose rocks or dead trees that could potentially pose a threat to your home during bad weather. You could repurpose the space for a veggie patch or herb garden. Having your own veggie garden won’t require much funding, just some time invested. Which makes it a great project for your Easter staycation. Get friends and family involved and then reap the fruits of your labour later on.

Do a home check

When you maintain your home you reduce potential damage or risk of intrusion which means you’re less likely to need to claim from your insurer. Clean your gutters; check your pipes for cracks and leaks and check your security features such as gates and burglar bars.

Draw up a checklist with the kids and get them involved (except, obviously where heights and chainsaws are involved!) And who knows, with a little innovation and lateral thinking, home could prove to be as good as a holiday!
