Toyota Security Upgrade

Newspaper articles have recently highlighted the increasing ease with which certain vehicle models are being stolen. The severity of this problem became especially evident when some insurers decided to refuse cover on specific vehicle models.

In strong contrast to this, OUTsurance has adopted a proactive approach by joining forces with Toyota SA to explore ways in which vehicle security - with specific reference to Fortuner and Hilux models - can be improved.

This partnership has resulted in the development of an additional security bracket. This steel bracket is made to fit over the ECU (unit that controls the immobiliser) to protect the unit from being tampered with.

These brackets have now been distributed to the entire Toyota dealership network where clients can also arrange for installation.

My vehicle is already insured with OUTsurance. Do I still have to get this installed? Yes. After we've notified you of this new requirement, you'll have 30 days notice to get this installed. Unfortunately, if the device is not fitted during this time, you'll no longer receive cover in case of theft or hijacking.

What is the next step? You simply need to contact your closest Toyota dealer to confirm that they have stock available and then confirm a date and time of fitment. The fitment of the bracket should take approximately one hour. Once the device had been installed, you need to fax the invoice to OUTsurance on fax number 0800 030 000.

Where can I go to have the security bracket fitted? You can have this done at any Toyota dealership. Please click here to locate your closest Toyota dealership.

How much does this cost? The installation costs between R300 and R400, depending on the individual dealership.

How long will it take to install? The fitment takes approximately 1 hour.

What are the other insurers doing? The insurance industry as a whole is feeling the negative effects of the thefts of these vehicles. While many have responded differently (from refusing to insure the cars or opting for more expensive monitoring and tracking systems), OUTsurance opted for an affordable and practical alternative.

Which year models need the upgrade? The upgrade is needed on all models prior to those manufactured in 2011 when the devices will be factory-fitted by Toyota SA. This means that the 2011 models will automatically adhere to the new security requirements. If this happens sooner (i.e. late 2010 models have factory-fitted units), the 2010 maufactured cars will still need to be checked at a dealership to confirm whether or not this device had been fitted already.
